Grafted polymers in bad solvents: octopus surface micelles

چکیده

Polymer chains are irreversibly grafted to a surface in a good solvent and the solvent quality is then reduced dramatically. The chains then collapse. If the grafting density is very high then the collapsed layer should be fairly uniform. However, at lower grafting densities the chains are predicted to form surface "micelles". These micelles minimize the exposed surface area of the collapsed globules at the expense of chain stretching energy. We also discuss grafting to a line and to a three dimensional network.

Polymers Grafted onto Strongly Adsorbing Surfaces in Poor Solvents: Stretching, Fission, Phase Separation, and Globular Micelles in 2D

Using both analytic theory and computer simulation we study the stretching along the surface of a strongly adsorbed polymer chain. In marked contrast to the case of nonadsorbed chains we show that the polymer does not undergo a Rayleigh instability. Instead it deforms steadily into a lens shape. Our results have dramatic consequences for submonolayer films formed from grafted chains. We show th...

Y-Shaped Polymer Brushes: Nanoscale Switchable Surfaces

We report a first observation of nanoscale surface structures of segregated pinned micelles of grafted Y-shaped molecules and their reversible structural reorganization. We designed a novel type of Y-shaped molecules combining two highly incompatible polymer chains (arms) attached to a single focal point capable of chemical grafting to a functionalized silicon surface. We demonstrated that spat...

Lipid membranes with grafted polymers: physicochemical aspects.

Membranes grafted with water-soluble polymers resist protein adsorption and adhesion to cellular surfaces. Liposomes with surface-grafted polymers therefore find applications in drug delivery. The physicochemical properties of polymer-grafted lipid membranes are reviewed with mean-field and scaling theories from polymer physics. Topics covered are: mushroom-brush transitions, membrane expansion...

Y-shaped amphiphilic brushes with switchable micellar surface structures.

We observed novel nanoscale surface structures of segregated pinned micelles and craterlike micelles formed by grafted Y-shaped molecules and their reversible reorganization in selective solvents. The Y-shaped molecules have two incompatible polymer chains (polystyrene and poly(tert-butyl acrylate)) attached to a functional stemlike segment capable of covalent grafting to a functionalized silic...

Surface-immobilised micelles via cucurbit[8]uril-rotaxanes for solvent-induced burst release.

The fabrication, characterisation and controlled burst release of naphthol-functionalised micellar (NFM) nanostructures, which were grafted onto gold surfaces through cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) mediated host-guest interactions are described. NFMs undergo a facile change in morphology from micelles to diblock copolymers in direct response to exposure to organic solvents, including tetrahydrofuran (...
